What is Plumb On-Line?

Named after a Plumb Line or a drawing tool used for balance, Plumb On-line is an online critique space for artists. The objective of these online critiques is to bring artists together, regardless of their physical location, to discuss their artistic process and receive feedback on their artwork.

It can be challenging to find a space to discuss your work after art school, or even among your friends. Plumb On-Line is designed to provide artists with the space to receive the kind of feedback they want on their work.

Currently, these meetings are every other month. The next meeting will be held on July 19th at 10:00 AM PST.

GENERAL GUIDELINES AND INFO

Objective:
The objective for these on-line critiques is to bring artists together, regardless of location, to talk about their artistic process and get feedback on their artwork. We strive to leave critiques feeling inspired, motivated, and with direction.

Overview:
On the day of the critique, all artists and observers will meet on Zoom at the designated time. Artists, bring a MAXIMUM of 2 pieces you’d like looked at. Each artist will have 15 minutes to:

● Describe your art, intention, and vision

● Ask for what kind of feedback you’d like

● Have a general discussion with fellow artist

Please have photographs of your work readily available on your computer on the critique date, either as a JPG or in a Presentation format, whatever will allow us to see the full piece. You’ll be able to “Share Your Screen” on Zoom with us when it’s your turn.

Critique Guidelines:

● Critique the work, NOT the artist

● Be prepared with

● Respect one another by giving artists your full attention when they’re presenting.

● Refrain from talking over people or monopolizing the conversation.

● Lead with your heart, not your Ego.

● Make sure that opinions that are subjective are clearly noted as such – a personal take.

Email: [email protected]

● Never assume meaning or intention, ask clarifying questions to better understand the unknown.

● Keep it basic – when speaking to other artists, try using a compliment sandwich.

● Avoid comparisons

Artist Guidelines:

● Choose an artwork you’d like critiqued.

● Set an intention about what you want out of the critique and verbalize it so we can best assist you.

● Set the tone for your work. Give the viewers some context of your artwork.

● Be receptive and open to feedback.

● Avoid defensiveness by asking clarifying questions to better understand what someone is saying.

● While creating art is incredibly personal, remember that most people don’t know much about you. Take what resonates, leave what doesn’t.

● As the artist, you DO NOT need to do what a critiquer says. This is a choice that’s your own personal decision.

There are different lenses that people wear that affect their interpretation of the artwork. Stay true to what feels right to you.

Question Ideas to Ask Yourself or the Artist:

1. What is working in this piece?

2. What is your first impression?

3. What immediately stands out to you?

4. What are you seeing/ interpreting based on the subject matter?

5. Are you applying any personal bias to the work?

6. Have you considered using a compliment sandwich when delivering unfavorable critiques or observations?

7. Are you describing issues with the artist or the art piece?

8. Am I being respectful and thoughtful in my feedback?
